Even though Devonté Hynes Aka Blood Orange, might arguably spend the majority of his musical career behind the scenes producing and writing for some of the industries greatest icons such as Solange Knowles and Kylie Minogue, he never fails to amaze spectators with his own projects… when the time comes. His versatility and ever-expanding, ever-evolving, soul-infused sounds combined with artistic aesthetics always guarantee a solid surprise.
It’s almost been a solid year since Blood Orange released his third solo LP Freetown Sound. Undoubtedly, the albums‘ soulful and smooth vibe combined with socially ‚woke‘ content have kept it relevant ever since.
The artistic visual, co-directed by Devonté Hynes, features snippets of the songs With Him, Best To You and Better Numb, all from his acclaimed 2016 album Freetown Sound. It was initially released to the public for free last month, however only for 24 hours, before being swiftly placed behind the TIDAL paywall. Now, thank God, it is viewable on Youtube and you can hit the replay button as often as you feel like it.
Hynes and director, Luke Gilford, collaborated on this short film which depicts Devonté singing and dancing away and lip syncing the three songs that beautifully tie together the visual. Shots of Hynes playing the piano, cello and violin bless us with a rather rare and personal POV as well.
This release came about a month after Devonté announced that he has teamed up with Starchild & The New Romantic’s own Bryndon Cook to launch a new group by the name of VeilHymn. Listen to their first song Hymn below.
